Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.
Ice or Rice is a start-up based in Cleveland, Ohio. We started as a food vendor at a local summer event called Night Market Cleveland. By the way, if you live in Cleveland and haven’t been there, we highly recommend it!
In 2015, Andy came up this idea. His wife told him, “You’re CRAZY. We are not professional chefs!” All of us have our full-time jobs and kids at home. It has kept us pretty busy. But we are glad that we tried this crazy thing and fell in love with it – doing more events and pop-ups in the summer, sharing our cooking experience with people, trying new recipes and perfecting our cooking skills. Now we are making videos and developing our YouTube channel to share more Asian comfort food with a focus on Chinese, Japanese and Malay cooking.
Although we are not professional chefs, Andy loves sharing a meal with people and talking about the cultural significance of each dish. He used to make lunch every week for the engineering firm that he used to work at. Each meal would have origins from parts of the world and he would give a short cooking demonstration and talk about its cultural significance and typically only charge $5 a meal to cover the costs of the ingredients. When Night Market Cleveland (NMC) came about, it was the perfect platform for him to share his love of food that he’s had during his travels that aren’t available in Northeast Ohio.
We are excited about the future of Ice or Rice and looking forward to introducing a great variety of Asian comfort food to you! If you want to know more about what we are “cooking up”, you can find us on Facebook and YouTube.
